{Stairway Designs: A Key Component in Home Planning

Beyond their utilitarian purpose, stairway designs are a essential architectural element that can define the appearance of a space. There are many types of stairs, each offering unique features and design possibilities for multiple spaces. From space-saving Spiral staircases to elegant Curved designs, there’s a stairway to fit any space or vision.

{Floating Stairs: A Statement of Modern Design

A Floating stair is defined by its clean design, creating the effect of steps hovering in air. The suspended effect is created by anchoring the stairs to a concealed structure, removing the need for obtrusive structures. Floating stairway designs are a top choice in contemporary design, as they add to the airy vibe of a home. The simple look of Floating stairway designs ensures that other decorative elements, such as artwork, can take centre stage. While impressive, Floating staircases require meticulous engineering to ensure they are stable and durable.

{Curved Stairs: Merging Elegance and Utility

The structure of Curved staircases involves a smooth arc that creates a sense of grandeur. With a softer curve, these stairs are more user-friendly than Spiral designs. This style is commonly used in grand homes, classic sites, or upscale hotels to make a bold statement. Curved stairway designs are more costly to build due to the masterful craftsmanship they require. Despite the expense, Curved staircases create a breathtaking design highlight that elevates any interior.

{L-Shaped Staircases: Enhancing Home Design

L-shaped staircases are celebrated for their right-angle bend, which usually includes a platform. This option is great for homes where space is compact, as the bend allows the staircase to fit into a corner, making the most of floor space. The platform acts as a break, improving the overall functionality of the staircase. These stairway designs are generally safer than Straight ones, as the bend minimises the chance of falls. L-shaped stairs are stunning, especially when the turn is accentuated with architectural features.

{Why U-Shaped Staircases Are a Favoured Option

U-shaped stairway designs are recognised for their two matching flights and a halfway landing that switches direction. These stairway designs are common in grand homes or office settings with generous ceilings. This option is remarkably compact, making it a practical choice for large spaces. The halfway landing is both practical and design, offering opportunities for innovative design. U-shaped stairs are a hallmark of luxury and are frequently found in opulent environments.

{Spiral Staircases: A Versatile Architectural Detail

The design of Spiral stairway designs involves stairs that wind around a helical pole in a circular pattern. This option is ideal for unconventional spaces, like patios, where standard stairs are impractical. These staircases can be constructed from materials such as metal, offering numerous design options. Although space-saving, Spiral staircases can be difficult to use, particularly for those with mobility challenges or carrying bulky items. Their distinctive look makes them a popular option for improving the design beauty of a space.

Staircases: Elevating Homes for Decades

As both a functional and artistic element, stairway designs highlight the ingenuity of architectural design. Whether you prefer a simple Straight stairway design or an intricate U-shaped design, the choices are virtually endless. Regardless of the design or use, stairs will always be a central feature in how we experience and use our environments.

Newcastle Council tackles dangerous staircases

More than 3,000 homes and 57 blocks of flats with potentially dangerous staircases have been identified by Newcastle City Council.

The ‘Ranch’ style staircase design, which features horizontal guarding, is classified as a category one hazard under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System.

Concerns about the staircases were raised last year, with residents warning that children use them as ladders or try to climb between the horizontal boarding.
